The First Recycled and Permeable Glass Paving to be Installed in Austin Area

The FilterPave™ system is a sustainable evolution in hard-surface porous pavements that actively filters stormwater and has the ability to absorb hydrocarbons, thus reducing pollution.

Lago Vista, Texas - May 15, 2009 – Presto Geosystems, a division of the Reynolds Packaging Corporation, will join Eco-crete Systems of Austin, Texas to install the first permeable paving system consisting of mostly 100% post-consumer recycled glass in Central Texas.

The site is located in Lago Vista, Texas on a wooded and sloping property near Lake Travis, just north of Austin. The structure is a modern style residence built in 1963 and recently restored by Houston architect, Karen Lantz, AIA of Enter Architecture. Installation is scheduled for Wednesday, May 20th, 2009 and will consist of a driveway and parking area.

The FilterPave™ pavement offers environmental benefits such as reducing stormwater runoff and utilizing a high percentage of recycled materials and contributes to USGBC LEED Green Building Credits in the categories of Reduced Site Disturbance, Stormwater Quality and Quantity Control, Reduced Heat Island Effect, Recycled Material Content, and Regional Materials (if project is within 500 miles of material source).

The paving system may be used for access roads, parking lots, pedestrian patios, driveways, sidewalks and trails / walkways. According to Bill Handlos, PE, Presto Geosystems Director, “The FilterPave™ system is a unique hard-surfaced porous pavement that utilizes post-consumer glass in a constructive way, eliminating landfilling of the nation’s abundant supply of recycled glass. The system creates a colorful mosaic of glass aggregate that is both aesthetically-pleasing as well as structurally stable. The glass is specially-processed to round the edges, making it as safe as any traditional surface on which to walk or drive. Our goal is to establish a nationwide network of recycled glass partners for close access and supply of the recycled glass material.”
